of Walking Athens
Street Photography Documentary
"of walking - Athens" is created in the context of the peripatetic photography. This is the quiet side of street photography during which attention is given primarily to the state of mind of the photographer and not to the hunting of exceptional phenomena. An approach to peripatetic photography is the experiential, direct, non-conceptual photography. Or just recreational, intuitive photography.
This photo sequence was taken on my last trip to Athens at my Christmas holidays in 2022. It is part of my history that I have been strolling around this city with my camera and notepad, almost every year since 1988. Out of the ruins, after the tragedy and devastation of the 2008 recession and the impact of the refugee crisis of 2015, Athens has reemerged as as a vibrant cultural hotspot.
The term "peripatetic" is a transliteration of the ancient Greek word peripatêtikos, which means "of walking" or "given to walking about" or "strolling". The Peripatetic school, is founded by Aristotle who taught philosophy while walking.
