Postcards from Sani Pass

31.07.2020

This postcard greeting is from a trip I took in 2004 to Sani Top Chalet, known as the highest pub in Africa (2874 m)

Sani Pass is a dramatic mountain pass that connects South Africa with Lesotho across the Drakensberg Mountains. Often referred to as the "Roof of Africa," the pass is famous for its steep hairpin bends, gravel roads, and breathtaking viewpoints that attract adventurous travelers from all over the world.

The route starts at 1,544 meters above sea level and climbs a total of 1,332 vertical meters to the summit. In winter, the road may be covered with snow and ice, but the views are worth every single bend. Today, the chalet has been upgraded, but the experience and memories from this great height remain.

The mountain pass lies in western KwaZulu-Natal, a province in eastern South Africa known for its rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and historical importance as the heartland of the Zulu nation. KwaZulu-Natal is South Africa's second most populous province, after Gauteng.
